Interior and exterior paints ask very different things of a white pigment. Indoors, the priority is opacity, whiteness and cost per litre. Outdoors, the pigment has to survive years of UV, rain and temperature cycling without chalking or dulling the film.
Interior paints
- Hiding power at low cost per litre is the main driver.
- Good dispersibility keeps mill times and finish quality under control.
- Clean whiteness supports bright pastel tinting bases.
- Exterior-grade weathering performance is not required, so premium durability is often wasted spend.
Cost-efficient sulfate rutile grades are usually the right answer for interior emulsions and trim.
Exterior paints
- Durable inorganic coatings (alumina, zirconia, silica) suppress photocatalytic activity and prevent binder degradation.
- High rutile content — typically ≥ 97 % — for chalking and gloss-retention resistance.
- Colour and gloss retention over multi-year exposure.
- Never use anatase: it accelerates chalking outdoors.
For facade, masonry, coil and other exposed systems, choose a rutile grade with a documented weathering-grade surface treatment; chloride grades are common where gloss retention matters most.
What to check on the datasheet
- Rutile content
- The higher the rutile share, the better the exterior durability.
- Surface treatment
- Multi-oxide inorganic coatings indicate a weathering-grade pigment.
- Oil absorption
- Affects how much pigment you can load before viscosity limits the formulation.
- Whiteness and undertone
- A bluish undertone reads as a cleaner white in both interior and exterior films.
