TiO₂ for Paints & Coatings: Opacity, Durability & Grade Selection

How titanium dioxide delivers hiding power, gloss and weathering resistance in coatings — and which grades suit decorative, industrial and powder systems.

Coatings are the biggest single market for titanium dioxide, and the most demanding on pigment quality. Opacity, gloss, whiteness and exterior durability all trace back to the grade you choose and how well it disperses in your binder system.

What the pigment has to deliver

Hiding power
Efficient light scattering so the film covers the substrate at the lowest practical pigment loading.
Gloss development
Fine, evenly dispersed particles that leave a smooth film surface rather than a hazy one.
Exterior durability
Inorganic coatings that suppress photocatalytic activity and prevent chalking and gloss loss.
Dispersibility
Short mill times, stable viscosity and no specks or seeds in the finished film.

Matching grade to coating type

Architectural and decorative

Interior and exterior emulsions, primers and trim paints. Cost-efficient sulfate rutile grades with strong whiteness and good dispersibility usually give the best balance.

Industrial, automotive and powder

Coil, powder, OEM and refinish systems need higher gloss, cleaner undertone and long weathering life. Chloride-process grades with tight particle-size control are typically specified.

Printing inks and packaging coatings

Opacity in thin films with good flow. General-purpose grades with a bluish undertone perform well here.

Our coatings grades

  • R-5566 — sulfate process, Interior and exterior paint, Emulsion paint, Powder coating
  • R-244 — sulfate process, Architectural and industrial coatings, Printing inks, Paper
  • R-298 — sulfate process, Furniture paint, Automotive repair paint, Printing inks
  • CR-350 — chloride process, High-end decorative paint, Automotive paint, Industrial paint
  • TYR-588 — chloride process, Building coatings — indoor and outdoor, gloss and semi-gloss, Automotive OEM and refinishing paint, coil coating, Industrial anti-corrosive, decorative and powder coatings

Practical formulating notes

  • Check oil absorption before pushing pigment volume concentration upward.
  • Confirm the surface treatment suits your binder chemistry — waterborne and solventborne differ.
  • Compare on equal hiding, not equal weight, when you benchmark two grades.
  • Run an accelerated weathering panel before switching an exterior product.
